THE REQUEST:
The office of Student Life and Leadership Development at Kean University retained Faith West Events (FWE) to develop a business etiquette series for the Council for Part-Time Students, an organization committed to facilitating the growth and vision of the Kean University adult learner and part-time student population. Their goal – provide their students with the necessary confidence and “soft power” that is becoming vital in today’s global marketplace. Kean University wanted to offer more to their students than just the textbook business curriculum.

THE COURSE:
FWE created a three part business etiquette series, based on a licensed curriculum developed by The Protocol School of Washington®, from whom FWE is a certified trainer. With a goal of inspiring individual power, FWE set out to dispel the beliefs that etiquette is a rigid and stuffy set of rules, but rather a microcosm of “humanness” and civility, often forgotten or ignored in this fast paced, technology-driven world of immediacy .
The class was taught with the signature FWE style of self-deprecating humor, and a focus on the small things, when done consistently, have the greatest impact.
Students were taught and practiced key business etiquette skills such as eye contact, handshaking, mingling, business card protocol, interview skills, telephone etiquette, host and guest duties, and Continental and American style dining. Throughout the class, participants were encouraged to discuss personal experiences, and participate in a myriad of exercises all geared to nurture “soft skills”.

THE IMPACT & BENEFITS
The student feedback from the class was overwhelming. Student’s commented that their confidence and authority in the business setting soared after taking part in the series. Class comments and a University measurement tool also reflected the student’s desires to not only learn more, but also to share the program with peers in and outside the University.
The success of the FWE Business Etiquette series is further evidenced by FWE becoming a frequent speaker at Kean University.
